(Kosovo) The goal of the Service-Learning (S-L) project was to address community needs through three mini-projects: school improvement, first aid training, and community safety awareness. The students worked on renovating their school by painting walls, planting flowers, and installing benches and trash bins, creating a more vibrant environment. They also participated in a first aid initiative, “One Minute Saves a Life,” which focused on equipping them with emergency response skills, such as handling snake bites, fractures, choking, and bleeding. The students received training from the Red Cross and then demonstrated these skills to other students and practiced with their families. The third mini-project aimed to raise awareness of community safety and preparedness.
Through these activities, students learned practical skills, including painting, planting, first aid, communication, and stress management. They gained experience in problem-solving, teamwork, and providing hands-on help to their school and community. The students also learned how to adapt their skills to meet the needs of others, such as explaining medical procedures to peers and family members. This project helped them build confidence, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of their role as active citizens.
The community benefited from improved school facilities and a heightened sense of emergency preparedness. Students not only enhanced the school environment but also gained valuable first aid skills, increasing their ability to respond to emergencies. The project also fostered stronger community ties, with local partners such as the Red Cross, businesses, and parents offering their support. These collaborations ensured the project’s success and provided long-term benefits, such as improved safety and practical knowledge that youth can use in their personal lives.
In conclusion, this project was a significant success, improving both the physical space of the school and the community’s emergency preparedness. It provided students with important life skills, demonstrated the power of community collaboration, and helped the youth become more engaged and responsible citizens.
